Is Srirachapocalypse Over? Company Says Smell is Under Control

Our long Sriracha nightmare may be over soon.David Tran, CEO of Huy Fong Foods, said the company has fixed the alleged odor problem caused by its production of the popular, spicy Sriracha condiment, according to Pasadena Star-News.

The city of Irwindale had sought a restraining order in October against the company, which the Los Angeles County Superior Court threw out, thereby eliminating the immediate threat of shutdown during the company’s three-month chili-grinding season. But Superior Court Judge Robert H. O’Brien instead said the company had to shut down processes that made the smell and fix the situation immediately.

The attempted restraining order alleged odors coming from the Azusa Canyon Road factory caused nearby residents’ eyes to burn and gave them coughing fits. In a letter to Irwindale’s Community Development Director received Friday, Tran said the company “made improvements to our odor filtering system, and now the odor has been controlled.”

Huy Fong’s Executive Operations Officer Donna Lam did not elaborate on those changes, but said she would explain them further at a planned public hearing at Irwindale City Hall on Wednesday.

But City Attorney Fred Galante said the city has still received some complaints since October, though they’ve subsided since the chili grinding ended in late October. Galante said the city would check out Huy Fong to see if they’ll share the specifics of the changes they’ve made and if the changes are sufficient.
