Downtown Culver City celebrates the summer solstice with freebies and discounts, the Aero Theatre will screen a modern Belgian film, Amoeba Hollywood will host a free DJ set, and LACMA welcomes summer in style with a discussion panel about Hollywood costumes. Read on for details and more summer fun.

Downtown Culver City's monthly Third Wednesday event returns to celebrate the first day of summer with its Sizzlin' Summer Solstice. Attendees are invited to sample Spiked Lemonade at many neighboring restaurants and bars before voting for the best drink and entering for a chance to win a prize package with gift certificates to local restaurants, spas, and the Kirk Douglas Theatre. Neighborhood salons, galleries, theatres, bars and restaurants will offer happy hour specials, discounted treats, live music, samples, and freebies. Ugo an Italian Café will sell $3 gelatos, Native Foods will hand out free dessert and wine samples, and Kay ‘N Dave’s Cantina will offer buy two get one free margaritas. The Expo Line Culver City Station will also provide free rides from the station, so no designated driver is necessary. The Aero Theatre will host a 35mm screening of Altiplano, starring Olivier Gourmet and Jasmin Tabatabai, as part of the theatre’s Grit and Whimsy III: Best of Recent Belgian Cinema series. A Belgian beer reception will follow the English-subtitled screening, and Crispy Truck will sell Belgian waffles with Nutella, Speculoos spread, strawberries, brie and basil, and ham & swiss and bacon outside the theatre. 7:30pm. $11. ($9 for students and seniors, $7 for Cinematheque members).

Glen Hansard will play at the Wiltern tonight. Hansard, who is also a member of the Swell Season, is on tour to promote his debut solo album, Rhythm and Repose, and will share the stage with Kelly Hogan, who has sung backup vocals for Neko Case in the past. 7pm. Tickets: $34-$57.85.

Mr. Little Jeans, also known as Monica Birkenes, will play a live DJ set tonight at Amoeba Hollywood. Amoeba will also sell an exclusive 12” with her cover of Arcade Fire’s “The Suburbs,” her single “Runaway,” and remixes from WAVVES and Fool’s Gold. 7pm. Free.

Western Costume Company, which has helped costumed Hollywood hits from Gone With the Wind to Titanic to Boardwalk Empire to Mad Men, will celebrate its 100th anniversary with a panel discussion with costume designers, supervisors, artisan milliners as well as boot and shoemakers at LACMA's Bing Theater. The event, The Costume Council Celebrates Western Costume Company: The First 100 Years, is presented by LACMA's Costume Council. There will also be a pageant showcasing 42 iconic Hollywood costumes, including Scarlett O’Hara’s green velvet dress and original creations from The Artist, Chicago, and Titanic. 7:30 pm. $45. The Annenberg Community Beach House will offer S.E.A.S. (Submerged Education in Aquatics) Skin Diving classes, starting today. Instructors will teach students to develop swim skills and awareness of the ocean in the Beach House pool and the ocean. Parking is included in the registration fee. $132 per 6-class session.
