Metro Puts Out New Video About Green Line to LAX, Acts Like It's Traffic's Fault You Can't Take Public Transit to the Airport

As part of a recently-launched campaign to get rider input about extending the current Green Line to the Los Angeles International Airport, Metro has put out a new video extolling the virtues of their plan to explore their options on the matter.

Maybe it's just that we're suffering from cynicism borne of accepting the reality that it's really hard to get to one of the world's largest airports via public transit, but the video seems like it's yucky, icky traffic's fault you can't get to LAX on the train, and that it's suddenly Metro's bright idea that the light rail line get you there. Come on, Metro, you can't really make this your Oprah lightbulb moment.

It's too simplistic to say that Metro is at fault for not getting their act together to begin with, mind you. There is a storied past filled with bureaucratic roadblocks and contentious relations between transit and LAX, and Los Angeles isn't the only city to have a delayed reaction by transit to push for efficient connections to the local airport. And it's not like potential riders or politicians haven't been talking about it; it's just that it's only recently that Metro has been open to talking about it.

Speaking of talking about it, Metro still wants to know what you think about public transit connections and LAX. Will it be a people mover? Light rail? Express bus? The third in a series of meetings is scheduled for August 30th. Dust off your soapbox!

  • I live in Highland Park so for me its a train ride on the Gold Line to Union Station and then the FlyAway Bus to LAX. I could get there solely Metro service but it would go as follows:

    Gold Line --> Red Line--> Blue Line --> Green Light --> Shuttle --> LAX

    That's way too many transfers.

    They should have a freaking Bullet Train or MagLev connection from Downtown LA to the Airport I swear things would be so different.

  • IT can be done today : 
    - Start from Union Station on the (Red Line)
    - Transfer at 7th and Metro (Blue Line)
    - Transfer at Imperial (Green Line)
    - At Aviation/LAX station, take a short connecting shuttle..

    and you're there. world class... i heard the other day that the green line stopped short initially because the Parking Co. opposed it going too close to airport.

  • "Fast"? "world class"? Are you on crack? I have been taking the Green Line to Aviation for more years than most folk, and it has always been a pain in the arse to get to and from LAX via Metro. (I even have a photo of the one poet whose words were on the western end of the station until about 15 years ago. Can you even name that poet?)

    Or are you just another Metro employee promoting a system you won't ride but expect others to use?

    "world class" indeed...

  • OK, so this, if it ever gets done, should make it easier to get to LAX from downtown. How about from the SFV? 

    Come on, I can't be the only one that sees that, even with all of the proposed addition to Metro rail, there NEEDS to be a link thru the Sepulveda Pass. At least hooking up the Orange line to the Green line. And the proposed Crenshaw line doesn't cut it. No connection to the SFV.

    ITA. I've tried to get to the Valley from LAX by mass transit. It took three hours, even on the Rapid buses. Linking the Orange and Green lines would be the best thing Metro could possibly do on the West Side. Not everyone's going downtown.

    I would literally get on me knees and do "not worthy" bows at the MTA if it would be upfront with the public instead of insulting our intelligence. I would rejoice at any variation of "The LAX gap sucks. It's sucked a long time. We were a big part of why it's sucked and we know you know that. But now we're finally trying to unsuck it. SRSLY." It would be a dream come true.

    But instead I wake up and watch this silly video with an "Oh come ON!"  incredulity at the whole disconnect JUST NOW being realized and addressed by those brilliant minds at Metro who've seemingly finally gotten bored staring at their navels all these years.

    I was sort of amused at the woman who mentioned Boston.

    You have one stop at Logan Airport.  You then catch a bus that goes around to all the terminals.  Kind of like what we have at LAX.

    And no-one in Boston calls it "The Charlie."  It's "The T."

    In the future...
    1.  Take the Gold line (north of Union Station) that will become the Blue Line then transfer to the Green Line
    2.  Take the Gold line (south of Union Station) that will become the Expo Line then transfer to the Crenshaw Line.
    Then at some common station, transfer to LAX's proposed people mover or shuttle.
    We are getting there, but at a snails pace.

    So in order to get to LAX via Metro I would take the gold line to union station, get on the red line in order to transfer to the blue line and then transfer to the green line which would take about 2 hours according to google maps transit directions.

    Yeah.. still not even remotely convenient. 

  • Don't forget about the phalanx of LASD deputies who tend to throttle the bottleneck between the Blue and Green Lines as well as the ridiculously narrow escalators. With one or two cases in tow, trying to appease the deputies barking demands to hurry up and get out your proof of fare while hundreds of people push past through the narrow, dark byway between the two rail lines, will be but the beginning of a fun trip to LAX.

    And if the deputies are not present, they are not far away, hanging out by their cars, parked by The Rock, like a gang hanging around outside a party.

    Then again, the Rosa parks Station is only the second busiest Metro rail station--not that its design looks as if it can handle it.

  • I take Metro to Union Station and the Flyaway from there, it's on-time, predictable, and way more convenient than driving and parking.

    flyaway cut back operating times, increased prices, and stopped accepting cash. westwood started at $4, now it's $10 a ride!

  • I've never had a problem taking the Metro to LAX. I just get on the Green Line to Aviation Station and then catch the FREE shuttle. Obviously leave with enough time and you'll be fine. Metro provides great service and I have no reason to complain.

  • Many of Metro's employees tend to be on the clock as they seek out negative blogs about metro, then comment on them. TheBusBench.com caught a few of them and even traced the IPs back to One Gateway and made screen shots after a number of Metro employees made comments similar to the one above.

    I work with the airport, and I've sat a terminal for over an hour waiting for a shuttle to the green line, to then take me the wrong way from where I live so I can get at least semi close. "Leave with enough time" is a cop-out excuse. I could walk from New York to LAX if I just leave with enough time! It's so simple, what logic!

    Rapid transit is supposed to be fast (hence rapid) and convenient. The current LAX situation is neither, and anyone who deals with LAX often is very very well aware of that. LAX is a nightmare of an airport. The transportation between terminals is a joke, the ground transportation in the loops are a joke, the quality of some of the terminals themselves (hi terminal 7! get a disease and die, please!) is a joke. 

    All things considered, its probably the worst major hub in the US.
