A small plane crashed into a parking lot in Pacoima this morning, according to fire department officials. The single-engine plane crashed happened just before noon today.

A man arrested for choking a pelican to death planned on eating the bird, according to sheriff's deputies. A witness told deputies that he watched Sergio Alvarez, 30, kill a pelican with his bare hands near the Malibu Pier.

A former priest who pleaded guilty to molesting an altar boy in the 1990s at St. John the Baptist Church in Costa Mesa was sentenced to a year in prison. Denis Lyons, 78, will also be sentenced to five years of probation and will have to complete 400 hours of community service.

A woman was struck by two cars yesterday as she rode her scooter through North Hollywood last night. Authorities haven't yet confirmed her identity, but she was described as a woman between 22 and 30 years old.

Cases of typhus have been on the rise in Los Angeles County over the past five or six years. So far, 15 cases of the flea-borne disease have been confirmed in the county and health officials are investigating 17 others.
