Man Planned To Eat Pelican He Choked To Death In Malibu, Deputies Say

A man arrested for choking a pelican to death planned on eating the bird, according to sheriff's deputies.A witness told deputies that he watched Sergio Alvarez, 30, kill a pelican with his bare hands near the Malibu Pier. But Alvarez told deputies he didn't kill the pelican, although he did plan on eating it.
"He said he was hungry. And he found the bird dead and was going to eat it," sheriff's Sgt. Michael Holland at the Malibu/Lost Hills station told City News Service.
Alvarez pleaded not guilty to one count of felony animal cruelty, according to CNS. The man described as a transient appeared in Van Nuys Superior Court today where his bail was increased from $20,000 to $30,000.
