  • Another sellout crowd packed the Doll Factory for the opening bout of the LA Derby Dolls 2010 season and even though several skaters got booted from the rink, the crowd stayed on its feet throughout the 60-minute, banked-track battle. The Varsity Brawlers opened its second season with a dominating defeat of the Sirens. It was all Brawlers early, jumping out to a quick 28-14 lead. The Sirens closed the gap in the 3rd quarter but...
  • Late Thursday Radiohead announced that it would perform a charity show benefiting the survivors of the devastating January 12th earthquake in Haiti. The tickets were made available via a Ticketmaster auction which ended with a final minimum bid of $475 (meaning many secured their tickets for $450). Some went above and beyond as the proceeds were going to Oxfam America's Haiti Relief Fund and the high bid was $2,000 per ticket (for either 2...
  • Hundreds of people came out to City Labs' first community service fair Saturday at the California Market Center. The fair showcased nearly 50 Los Angeles non-profit organizations and featured demos and workshops as well as raffles and prizes for attendees. Sonja Rasula, who recently brought Unique LA to the same space and was named one of LA's young community leaders, organized the event to "attract 'the masses' in order to engage community, provide an outlet...
  • Goldenvoice managed push out the 2010 Coachella lineup this morning -- a full 3 months in advance of the 3-day festival April 16-18 in Indio -- and before the typical fake Coachella posters made the rounds. Two highly anticipated comebacks are realized with Pavement and Faith No More, but read deep into the small print and you'll see Sly and the Family Stone, Devo, Grace Jones, and other blasts from the past. But really,...

The waterspout was sighted at 1:02 pm moving northeast toward the coast, according to NWS....

  • This Thursday night in Manhattan Beach we'll hear what the online dating game was, is, and what it can be from five distinct points of view. From shameless social media oversharing to sexting, twittercrushes and swingers socials, there's another world of possibilities for all you disgruntled JDaters and eHarmonists.
  • To find what gadgets we'll want in our living room, car, and back pocket over the course of the year, we needn't look further than The 2010 Consumer Electronics Show last weekend in Las Vegas. Of course, we couldn't buy anything there -- it's a trade show -- and we'll be lucky to afford much at this rate. Check out some of the hits and misses at CES in the photo essay below....
  • That orange question mark on AT&T's coverage map is asking WHY?!? Why does your wireless voice service still suck so bad?!? When I moved into this neighborhood four years ago after driving out from Chicago, one of my first objectives was to test the various cellular phone (that's what we called them back then) providers. I tried each and every carrier available. There may have been five options at the time. Each mobile service...
  • The Amtrak Surfliner departed San Diego 10:35 a.m. last Saturday -- right on time. But Train 571, a weekend-only train filled with families and weekend adventurers, never made it to its final destination -- Union Station, LA.
