  • The National Organization for Marriage is saying that straight New Yorkers are becoming "oppressed" by possibly having to accept gay marriage as law. Say whaaa???
  • Yvonne Jean Pampellonne, 30, of Liguna Niguel stole an identity, opened a line of credit and bought herself some new boobs. But when she failed to show for follow-up appointments, this raised a red flag. Doctors used the implant tracking numbers to find Pampellonne, and now she's facing the possibility of 3 years and 8 months in prison. It's pretty obvious the things that are important to her (as her myspace states), "Setting an example for my daughter. Showing her there are better things in life."
  • Up now on the Recession chopping block - newspaper stands. Only the locations in the most populated areas have been surviving, with the rest having to turn into cigarette shops just to survive.
  • It's the most wonderful time of the year - Scripps Spelling Bee time, and a Valencia girl made it all the way to the Semi's today. 13-year-old, Paige Vasseur, failed to advance though after misspelling, "skeuomorph" - an ornament or design on an object copied from a form of the object when made from another material. Way to represent, though!
  • Joe's Pizza first invaded SoCal in Santa Monica, now the NYC staple is coming to WeHo. They'll be located at the old Cristoni Pizzeria, 8539 Sunset Blvd. Loosen them belts, ya'll!
  • LAX is looking to get some good restaurant and shopping upgrades going in the airport. Good thing because CPK, Karl Strauss, and Wolfgang are pretty played out. Gina Marie Lindsey, executive director of the airport agency says, "we need more cutting-edge, more contemporary and more L.A.-centric approaches."
  • Prompted by the LA Times referring to various intersections along La Brea Blvd as "west Los Angeles," the LA Weekly became curious enough to enter a long-fought Los Angeles debate--defining neighborhoods, something the Times is taking seriously in their Mapping L.A. Project.

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
