Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

The weekend is so close you can practically taste it. Here are the edible events going on in the next few days to keep you occupied -- and sated, for that matter.

Brunch at Barnsdall Art Park: Just when you were lamenting the end of the summer's wine series up at the Hollyhock House, the folks at Barnsdall have come to the rescue with a fall brunch event. Heirloom LA will be catering eats to be paired with a three-taste champagne flight by Silverlake Wine. There'll be coffee courtesy of Bru, too.The event goes down on Sunday, from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Fall Ice Cream Class at Carmela: Seeing as how the heat wave has afflicted us lately, perhaps it's more appropriate whacky ice cream flavors to bring to your Thanksgiving table than a freshly baked pie. How about Roasted Sweet Potato, Cranberry Orange Thyme sorbet, Pear Champagne sorbet, Brown Butter Sage, Aztec Chocolate, Nutmeg, Spiced Apple sorbet, and Candied Pecan? If that sounds up your alley, head over to Carmela on Saturday, where they'll be doing an instructional class from 9:30 a.m. - noon. The $100 fee includes 2 pints. To reserve your space, email store@carmelaicecream.com.

Dessert and Coffee Pairing at Demitasse: Think foams are just for cocktails and modernist cuisine? Think again. On Sunday, Barista Sean Panzer will do a four-course pairing of desserts paired with coffee or tea beverages over at Santa Monica's Cafe Demitasse, whipping up creations like oolong tea with lemon foam, or espresso with chocolate-hazelnut biscotti. There are two seatings, one at 6 p.m. and another at 8 p.m., each for $35 per person. You need to secure a spot in order to attend, so email your name, phone number and how many in your party to info@cafedemitasse.com.

Typoon Relief Fundraiser at The Oinkster: Filipino chef Andre Guerrero ishosting a benefitat The Oinksterthis weekend. This Saturday and Sunday, they'll be bringing back their pork adobo burger, donating all the proceeds to the Red Cross.
The burger is made up of a stewed then pan fried pork served atop a pork patty with adobo sauce, mayo, and pico de gallo on a pan de sal bun. Guererro's sister restaurant, Maximiliano, will match the amount donated. You can find out more info on their site.

There'll be daytime tastings from 2-5 p.m. for $150; VIP is $300. Find them here.

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
