Despite brutally hot temperatures and a sprawling new home, Southern California's own hippy/party festival Lightning in a Bottle pulled out all the stops yet again in its fifth year running this past weekend in Temecula. The Do LaB-sponsored music and arts festival moved from a Memorial Day slot in past years to a scorching mid-July slot to the pain and pleasure of everyone attending.
What the festival lost in intimacy it gained in legitimacy, with a giant new spread that gave everyone plenty of room to run around and de-stress with a New Belgian in their hands.
The Do LaB's legendary art installations were out in full force with no short of psychedelic, bizarre eye candy around every turn. And naturally, it wouldn't be Lightning in a Bottle without the endless smiles and good vibes of the thousands of unique festival goers that called Lake Skinner home for this dusty and hot weekend.
Highlights were all over the map, ranging from the massive once in a lifetime 1 Giant Mind group meditation to the high-energy electronic closing sets from Rusko, GriZ and PANTyRAid. And thankfully, promoters saw fit to book significantly more live sets, including Papadosio, Gold Room, Tycho and Herbert Bail Orchestra.
Change can be tough, but leave it to The Do LaB to embrace a new date and location for their proud baby with warmth and ease. This one-of-a-kind festival continues to grow and thrive, and despite some minor speed bumps along the way, it provided festival-goers once again with an uniquely unrivaled experience that will stay on the minds of many for the immediate future.
