See a larger image at KTLA Power went out this morning along Beverly Boulevard in the Park La Brea area, most notably causing traffic lights to go down and businesses to shutter along Beverly Boulevard. The LADWP confirms that 664 customers have been affected and that crews are working to restore power. Although it's windy, no official cause has been cited. Out in Granda Hills, a large tree fell onto a house, leaving a...

As noted in Sunday's edition of Extra, Extra, gubernatorial candidate Democrat Jerry Brown is leading Republican opponent Meg Whitman 52% to 39%, according to the latest LA Times/USC poll, which was released this weekend. The poll, conducted by two firms -- one Democrat and one Republican -- surveyed 1,501 California voters, of which 922 were likely voters. The margin of error is 3.2 points, but widens when subgroups are examined. Whitman, however, was quick...

With the election just over a week away comes a blitz of new TV ads, many of them from campaigns the wider audience hasn't heard of. Case in point: Prop 19, the effort to legalize marijuana. On Tuesday, the first Yes on 19 ad will appear in the Los Angeles market (and apparently is the first TV spot from either side of the issue). It features former San Jose police chief and current research...

Imagine if every neighborhood in Los Angeles took a few minutes each year to come together and take a "family" portrait. That's what community members in Laurel Canyon have been doing since 1989 in an event that has grown large enough to warrant a street closure. Tom Nelson, along with the Canyon Country Store owner Tommy Bina, started "Photo Day" 21 years ago "just to take a picture of the neighborhood," said Nelson (and it...

NASA astronaut Doug Wheelock used Foursquare to check into the international space station. It unlocked a new badge: the "“NASA Explorer." "California's unemployment rate stayed put last month, remaining at 12.4 percent and hinting at some stability after the state has endured a brutal run of...

L.A. in the past has seen a food truck go brick and mortar, but this weekend a popular event gets a turn. Sonja Rasula's Unique LA has always been a widely-attended seasonal show where shoppers can find a plethora of local and U.S. independent design and gift vendors (get a taste of what is sold in this photo essay), so why not try something a little more full time? Furniture store H.D. Buttercup offered Rasula...

Photo via Office of Bob Blumenfield With new state legislation giving local governments the power to ban mobile billboards, San Fernando Valley politicians are ready to party. Literally. Assemblymember Bob Blumenfield, who co-authored the ban with Assemblymember Mike Feuer, today announced that next week he's holding a party to celebrate the passing of the legislation. Referred to as mobile billboards, the unhitched trailers display vertical advertisements and are found throughout the city, especially parked...

via Google Maps Three beaches around Vandenberg Air Force Base have been shut down for at least three days after a body surfer this morning was fatally bitten by a shark. The incident happened this morning at Surf Beach, which is officially a base beach, but is publicly accessible via the Lompoc area. "Long considered a “sharky” area by locals, Surf Beach... has been the site of several shark sightings in recent years including...

Lindsay Lohan was back in court this morning to learn of her fate after violating probation when she failed a drug test. The District Attorney was pushing for the mandatory 180 days in jail, but Judge Elden Fox took Lohan's admission that she was an addict into account, sentencing her to rehab until January 3rd, followed by a court date on February 25th, according to E! But if she violates that, Fox will have...
