UCSB Student, Naked From The Waist Down, Allegedly Assaults Pastor
A 22-year-old UCSB student was arrested early Saturday morning after police say he allegedly assaulted a pastor in his home...without wearing any pants.KTLA reports Father Jon-Stephen Hedges heard someone pounding on the front door of his home in Isla Vista—eventually throwing his body against the door, according to NBC L.A., yelling for help. According to a press release from the Santa Barbara Sheriff's Department, Hedges opened the door, believing the person outside was in serious trouble, and was met by Paul Gusman, "naked from the waist down."
Gusman then began punching Hedges in the face repeatedly; more than 30 times, according to the Sheriff's Dept. Gusman also allegedly hit Hedges' wife on her hand. She managed to call 911, and when the Isla Vista Foot Patrol arrived, they found Gusman standing in the front yard. He appeared to be "under the influence of a controlled substance(s) and possibly intoxicated."
Gusman was arrested, and taken to a nearby hospital where he was treated for injuries sustained during the attack. He's been charged assault, residential burglary, elder abuse and dissuading a witness/victim, and will be arraigned next week. He is being held on $500,000 bail. Authorities believe the attack was random, and that Gusman did not know Hedges.
According to the release, Hedges was treated for major injuries at a nearby hospital, and was released. He graduated from UCSB and has lived in Isla Vista since 1968.
