This Week's Most Popular

Photo of Bulldog Beauty Pageant/Tom Andrews for LAistWhen you read something you like on LAist, we love it when you hit the "recommend" button, and we love it even more if you put your two cents' worth in the comments. Getting a dialog going with our readers and making sure we're giving you content you can use are top priorities for us.
So here are this week's top three posts, as endorsed by you via the recommend feature, or as indicated by the level of talk going on in the comments...
Photo of Rihanna Following Her Fight with Chris Brown Leaked to TMZ
The photograph of a battered Rihanna was so disturbing we ended up moving it to the bottom of the post out of repect for our readers. The LAPD is conducting an internal investigation regarding the unauthorized release of the photo. If you or someone you know is being abused by a spouse, family member or friend, seek help and call the Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-978-3600
Eightmaps.com: Hypocritical Privacy Violation, Or Reverse-Super Judo?
Once again, Ross Lincoln's acerbic wit helps to clear up our muddied political waters, this time surrounding Eightmaps' disclosure of donors to the "Yes on 8" campaign. The map discloses full names, job titles, and even employers, highlighting the issue of public disclosure vs. the right to privacy. Ross suggests condemning any violence against Prop 8 supporters, if it can actually be proven, suggests the Prop 8 supporters stop lying about these supposed threats, accept the incredible irony, and that Eightmap's creator identify themselves or at the very least make themselves available for anonymous interviews with the press. Ross also shows off his impressive footnoting skills, but that is another matter entirely.
Multiple Mom Susan Pinsky: Triplets Were A Lot of Work, Now Octuplets...
In light of octuplets mom Nadya Suleman, who now has a total of fourteen kids being loved and hated all over the media, LAist sat down with Susan Pinsky, mother of triplets and wife of Dr. Drew Pinskey to get her take on the controversy. Pinsky shares her own experience openly and is understanding and compassionate as she ponders the road ahead for Nadya Suleman.
As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.
Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.
We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.
No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.
Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.
Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
