Americans Say California Is Craziest, Hottest State

Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

In a recent poll, Americans nationwide rated how crazy, drunk, hot, et cetera the people who reside in each state probably are. (At least, according to existing stereotypes.) No surprise, California rated both craziest and hottest.

SurveyMonkey polled 1603 Americans from coast to coast and the results were "hilarious, informative and tell you everything you need to know about the dynamic between the states," writes Business Insider, who asked for the survey.

Each of the people answered questions about states that aren't their own. The poll was carried out using SurveyMonkey's Audience feature, which, they say, "was more accurate predicting the 2012 election than numerous traditional pollsters. "

Which state has the best food?
New York scored around 20% of the vote for best food. California and Louisiana got honorable mentions.

Which state is your favorite?
Besides their own state, people had the highest opinion of California, with 194 non-Californians choosing the Golden State. Colorado is also pretty popular. (Texas was voted least popular).

Which state is the craziest?
California, by a landslide, with 25 percent of the vote.

Which state has the hottest people?
A whopping 51 percent chose California. "This question wasn't even close, it appears that Katy Perry was right," writes Business Insider.

As far as best scenery, that went to Colorado and Hawaii, but we received "honorable mention," along with Alaska and Montana.

California also racked up points for best place to vacation, along with Florida and Hawaii. And we scored pretty high for "drunkest," although first place went to Louisiana. No fair, they have Mardi Gras!

Sadly, we also were ranked high for being "overrated" and (it's hard to tell from the color maps) apparently more than a few would like to see our fair state kicked out of the union. Fine, no Disneyland for you!

We lost out on "rudest" to New York and "dumbest" to Mississippi. Keep reaching for that rainbow, California!
