A man allegedly holding a knife was shot and killed by CHP officers in Santa Monica early Monday morning, City News Service reports.

The incident occurred just after midnight in the 3300 block of Pico Boulevard. The man was first seen walking along the 10 Freeway, and was later spotted by CHP officers on the center median. When officers approached, he fled the freeway and wound up on surface streets, KTLA reports. The shooting took place between two buildings on Pico after the man allegedly moved towards officers with a knife. The man was later pronounced dead at a hospital. No officers were harmed.

According to NBC Los Angeles, the man may have approached a driver with a knife prior to encountering officers. The man's identity has not been released at this time.
