  • NowPublic announced today that our very own LAist Editor, Zach Behrens, is one of the 20 most influential individuals in Los Angeles ("in the digital landscape"). He came in at #8 (you go dude!). However, the list, which includes Perez Hilton, Xeni Jardin and Micki Krimmel, hasn't come without controversy. Sean Bonner, also listed, took issue with the list, calling it link baiting. The LA Times also checked it out, quoting Behrens about other heavy influencers who didn't make the cut (e.g., Kevin Roderick and Eric Richardson), and found that earlier versions of the list in New York City and Silicon Valley share similar accusations.
  • And the winner of the new Irvine home provided by the Irvine Public Schools Foundation is... my sister! Sound a little fishy? Don't worry, Foundation members hit up family and friends for donations for the raffles, so think of it as the Irvine version of a JV Basketball halftime 50/50.
  • Joan Hyler, Producer and Talent Manager who was struck on the PCH on Friday by 50-year-old Walter Filippini, is still in critical condition today with brain trauma and multiple fractures. "There was no sign of intoxication and no traffic violation on the part of Mr. Filippini, so there will be no further traffic investigation," said sheriff's Sgt. Philip Brooks.
  • Santa Monica passed the overhaul of parking garages located next to the 3rd Street Promenade. The new look was designed by local architects Pugh + Scarpa.
  • Seven SoCal men were arrested as part of an ongoing investigation into 55 men believed to produce and possess child pornography. "The evidence is horrific,'' said U.S. Attorney Thomas O'Brien."
  • Taggers everywhere, think about your parents before you decorate our beautiful cityscapes with your righteous tag. Your mom and dad will now be liable (as well as you) for all civil damages that you cause.
  • In not-so-shocking news, homes in the OC are 10th least affordable in the nation.
  • Awww..... look at your mom's cute new little baby face!

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
