An 81-year-old Lake Forest woman shot and killed her ex-grandson in law as he tried to pick up his toddler son from her house. Technically, we suppose that makes her a pistol-packing great-granny. Reasons for the shooting remain a mystery.

Shooting in Los Angeles — on-location film shooting, that is — saw slow growth in 2005, after a 20% jump in 2004. Slow growth doesn't mean any fewer shoots, though: just ask anyone who lives downtown.

Last week authorities raided law offices in Garden Grove in Alhambra because a lawyer was practicing without passing the bar. How'd they get the tip? He took out a full-page newspaper ad. Featuring a photo of his illegally-practicing self.
