A teen girl who may have been a runaway has died following her dramatic rescue from the base of a dam in San Diego County.

The unidentified 16-year-old girl was found by two hikers late Monday afternoon. The girl was "lying in water at the base of the Upper Otay Lakes Dam," reports KFMB out of San Diego.

Rescue personnel went into the dam to aid in the teen's removal. The girl was airlifted by helicopter and taken to an area hospital for treatment.

Officials say the girl was suffering from multiple injuries to her head, leg, and hip.

The teen, who is believed to have been reported as a runaway from Chula Vista, died of her injuries at the hospital.

Authorities are investigating the case as a homicide, "due to its circumstances and the fact that the victim is a minor," according to NBC San Diego, who add: "Officials say the teen may have fallen off a concrete wall and landed in the lake bed."

A $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case has been offered by San Diego Crime Stoppers, reports L.A. Now.
