Man Takes Ex-Girlfriend On Crazy Police Chase, Bails Out Of Driver's Seat

A man took his former girlfriend on a dangerous police chase in her car, and ultimately jumped out of the moving vehicle. The wild ride began around 11 p.m. on Sunday near Western Avenue and Imperial Highway in South L.A., when the suspect refused to return his ex-girlfriend's car that he borrowed from her that day, Lt. J. Wargo of Sheriff’s Transit Services told City New Service. As the man attempted to leave with the car, his ex jumped in the front passenger seat. That's when things escalated. The man crashed the car, which damaged the passenger side door, preventing it from closing. With the ex-girlfriend barely in the car, the suspect continued to drive away.
“The door was lodged partially open and she was part in and part out screaming for help,” Wargo said.
As the suspect continued to drive, a Transit Services deputy heard the woman screaming and began pursuing the vehicle, heading north on Western Avenue. The chase continued until 103rd Street, when the man slowed the car enough to jump out while it was still moving and attempted to flee on foot. The woman was able to stop the vehicle.
The man eventually surrendered to deputies—who had set up a perimeter—and he was treated for minor injuries, including road rash from bailing out of the car. The woman was uninjured. The man is expected to be booked on a number of crimes, including evading an officer.
