LAX Relief

If you're planning to pick up visitors at LAX this holiday season, you've got some good news coming. The Daily Breeze and other media outlets report that LAX has established a a new 79-space "Cell Phone Waiting" parking lot on Airport Boulevard, where motorists can wait for free until they get calls from arriving passengers.
The Daily Breeze reports:
LAX officials unveiled the aptly named Cell Phone Waiting Lot during a news conference at which they also announced that an estimated 2.8 million passengers will pass through the world's fourth-busiest airport between last Friday and Jan. 2 -- about 7 percent more than last year. The busiest travel days are expected to be this Thursday and Friday, they said.
The new waiting lot is modeled on amenities offered at about a dozen U.S. airports, including those in San Diego, Philadelphia and Baltimore, said Michael DiGirolamo, LAX's deputy executive director of airport operations.
LAX intends to open two additional lots -- one to the east and one to the south -- by summer, he said, adding that locations have not yet been selected.
People must remain with their vehicles, but there is no limit as to how long they can wait at the lot, which is just north of the U.S. Post Office on the west side of Arbor Vitae Street.
The facility will be open all hours, and LAX police will monitor it as part of their regular airport perimeter patrols, said LAX spokeswoman Nancy Castles.
The lot is the latest in a series of congestion-busting measures that airport officials have undertaken.
