Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

Thousands of scattered blackouts are happening in Southern California due to extreme heat and an increased demand for power.

According to online outage maps, there is no power for about 2,000 So Cal Edison customers and about a thousand LADWP customers as of 4:45 a.m. Friday.

Water and Power spokesman Joe Ramallo says this week's heat wave is putting a strain on equipment.

"It's staying so hot so late into the evening and so humid that people's air conditioners aren't turning off, the power equipment in neighborhoods is having to run nonstop, it's kinda like running your car 100 miles an hour nonstop - eventually you're going to burn out the engine," said Ramallo.

Ramallo said the department replaces equipment during the year to prevent outages.

So far the grid has been holding up, and DWP expects it to hold. Still, it's urging customers to save power during peak demand, which is 11 a.m. and 6 p.m.
