FBI: SoCal man arrested for trying to provide 'material support' to al-Qaida [UPDATED]

An Orange County man accused of providing material support to al-Qaida will be held in federal custody until his next appearance in U.S. District Court on Oct. 18.
Sinh Vinh Ngo Nguyen, 24, of Garden Grove was arrested Friday at a Santa Ana bus station before boarding a bus to Mexico, according to a statement from the FBI.
Prior to his arrest, a federal grand jury in Los Angeles handed down a two-count indictment against Nguyen. It charged him with planning to provide material support to al-Qaida and making false statements on a passport application "to facilitate an act of international terrorism."
Nguyen, also known as "Hasan Abu Omar Ghannoum," pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Investigators don't believe Nguyen was working with others, according to the FBI statement, and say there isn't a continuing threat to the public from Nguyen.
The FBI also notes that, due to the government shutdown, they weren't planning on giving interviews about the case.
