2003 Sequoia acceleration glitch prompts Toyota to issue voluntary recall

With our free press under threat and federal funding for public media gone, your support matters more than ever. Help keep the LAist newsroom strong, become a monthly member or increase your support today .

TORRANCE — A programming glitch that affects acceleration is behind Toyota's announcement of a voluntary recall today of about 50,000 early 2003 Sequoia sport utility vehicles.

No injuries or accidents have been reported as a result of the glitch, according to the auto maker.

According to Toyota, the Vehicle Stability Control system can in some situations activate for a few seconds when the driver attempts to accelerate after a stop. As a result, the vehicle may not accelerate as quickly as expected.

Starting in late May, Toyota will begin mailing letters to all Sequoia owners included in the recall.

Toyota has recalled millions of vehicles in recent months, many for a well-publicized problem with sticking accelerator pedals.
