Here's a tale for your heartstrings. David Juan Martinez has been an ice cream vendor for 30 years. He is 71 years old, and a father of seven children. On Wednesday night at about 7:45 p.m. in North Hollywood, he was stopped by two men who he believed were looking to buy some ice cream, KTLA reports. Because Martinez does not speak English, he was unsure of what the men were saying to him. The men allegedly punched him and threw him to the ground, stole $80 and fled. Martinez suffered a broken nose, two black eyes and cuts to his face. According to his daughter-in-law, Laura Rodriguez, $80 was what he'd earned that week.Martinez, who has been attacked twice before while selling ice cream, wanted to get straight back to work. But Martinez's family decided to crowdsource for his retirement, and it appears to be working. So far, the compassionate public has raised over $30,000 for the man.

Rodriguez wrote in on a GoFundMe page:

As we walked out the Hospital I told him that he needs to rest, and he said he will rest the night and go to work tomorrow. I don't want him to continue putting his life at risk. He and his wife are very hard workers. They never ask for help or bother anyone. He didn't deserve to be assaulted especially as a senior age. He sells ice cream and he loves it, but it's time for him to start taking care of himself. Please help me raise enough money so he can retire!

The alleged attack is currently under investigation.
