Hollywood: A synonym for sex, fame, and power in a "shallow way"?

Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

Conservatives are not happy with Wikipedia. Apparently they believe the liberal bias in the media extends to media created by... uh... everyone? So in November 2006 they created Conservapedia, an online encyclopedia with "educational, clean, and concise entries." This is how it defines Hollywood: "a neighborhood located in the city of Los Angeles, California. As a lexical entry, it refers to the movie studios once located in the district, and more generally, to the motion picture business. It is a synonym encompassing all the definitions of 'glamour', 'beauty', 'fame', 'sex', and 'power' in a shallow way."

What?! I always thought it was a synonym for those things in a deep way. Like, how Paris Hilton wants to build halfway houses now that she has seen how awful prison is.

In case you're wondering what the "liberally biased" Wikipedia had to say about Hollywood, their entry includes such prejudiced information as the population, the boundaries of the neighborhood, and the median household income.

There's no mention of depth -- or sex and fame -- at all. Shockingly lefty.

The site acknowledges that it doesn't claim to be unbiased like Wikipedia. For more fun comparative encyclopedia reading, check out what they say about homosexuality, "an immoral sexual lifestyle between members of the same sex."

The marijuana entry shocked me, as it ends with this very positive tidbit: "The substance however has been found to promote good heart health, as well as proving to be a type of defense against some cancers." Pretty liberal information, actually.

The entry on "Condoms" has been "deleted and protected to prevent re-creation." Planned Parenthood, as cited in the abstinence entry, "profits from teenage sexual activity." And apparently the majority of believers in evolutionsince World War II have been atheists. Very interesting stuff.

But by far the best thing on the page that I've found is the entry on our current president. According to the self-proclaimed "Trustworthy Encyclopedia," "though the liberal media continues to disparage Bush's handling of the economy, they often neglect to report the many aspects of the economy that Bush has improved. For example, during his term Exxon Mobil has posted the largest profit of any company in a single year, and executive salaries have greatly increased as well." Yeah, what an accomplishment.

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
