High Flying Start
USC did what it had to do in its quest for a third straight national championship. The Trojans 63-17 victory over Hawaii met expectations, as Matt Leinart, Reggie Bush, and co. showed few signs of rust. While Leinart is the Trojan making the most headlines after his highly-publicized decision to stay in school, LAist thinks Bush is the key the Trojans offense. We like his chances to win the Heisman Trophy this year. His explosive speed seems virtually unstoppable. But LAist also doesn't want people to forget about LenDale White, who is one of the five best running backs in college football right now, and wide receiver Steve Smith, who looks ready to have a major breakout season.
Our main concern with USC on Saturday was its plethora of stupid penalties. It's inexcusable to throw a football at an opposing player, especially when you're the defending champs. USC should be above excessive celebration penalties, especially against Hawaii. We're convinced though that Pete Carroll will get his team in line for the next week.
LA's other football team team also got off to a great start with a nice 44-21 win over San Diego State. Maurice Drew is looking as good as any running back right now. The Bruins are going to need to do something about Drew Olson, who remains average and uninspiring. With Ben Olson's hand broken, LAist wonders if David Koral shouldn't be the starter instead. UCLA has the talent to make an upper-tier Bowl game this year. If Karl Dorrell screws it up, he'll be in trouble.
