Heavy Turnout, Long Lines
LAist voted this morning at Our Mother of Good Counsel in Los Feliz, and, if the lines there were any indication, many LA voters may find themselves waiting an hour or more to cast their ballots.
With the consolidation of neighborhood polling places, a loooong list of propositions to wade through, and, of course, the Presidential election all converging on one date, log jams are bound to arise.
Attitudes regarding the length of the wait ranged from good humor to grim determination, but we saw no one leave the line, aside from the pug who escaped his owner and went on a leg sniffing rampage inside the polling place (she was quickly apprehended by her apologetic owner).
LAist would advise voting as early as possible, as it's only going to get worse as the day wears on. We made the mistake of voting in the recall election after work, and spent a grueling hour in line to cast our vote in a beauty salon, of all places.
This year, with higher turnout, it could be even worse for last- minute voters. The best thing to do is vote now, then just kick back to watch the fireworks. Flip on cable news for background noise, and continually check in with your favorite political blogs (the blogosphere is already heating up: blogger.com is experiencing intermittent slowdowns). Get some booze, which will come in handy whether your candidate wins or loses. Get ready to witness history.
You'll be secure in the knowledge that you did your civic duty, and even better, you'll have done it by waiting in a line that did not lead into a nightclub.
