The Coffee Buzz
In our continuing Monday morning tradition (two weeks in a row makes it a tradition, btw), LAist brings you our second edition of The Coffee Buzz.
Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf #2
Malibu Country Mart
3835 Crosscreek #7
Malibu, CA 90265
Hours: Mon-Sun 6:00 AM–9:00 PM
Malibu is known for the pioneering of many things over time, some of which include the fashionable-yet-practical wearing of Ugg boots to formal dinners, the legally-questionable practice of celebrities converting their public beachfronts into private "off-limits" areas, and inventing the ever-popular Coffee Bean drink the Malibu Dream.
The sweet combination of a strawberry-banana fruit smoothie blended together with vanilla powder and ice originated here at the Coffee Bean at the quaint Malibu Country Mart. For years this was the only location that served it, until weekend visitors to this "tiny-but-powerful village" began demanding the same on the Westside and in Hollywood. Before long, the Malibu Dream landed a permanent spot on all Coffee Bean menu boards, proving that if you can make it in Malibu, you can make it anywhere.
As for the location itself, the unassuming wooded shop is packed all summer long with tourists renting above their means, actors and producers wanting to get some face time while wearing their Birkenstocks, and a few locals here and there. In reality, most of the locals won't come back until after Labor Day Weekend when Malibu will return to the normal (kind-of) sleepy beach-town that it is during the off-season.
If you're passing through and looking for the best-made Malibu Dream or enjoy having numerous 60+ pound dogs sniffing your crotch while you're trying to relax with your blended drink on the patio (apparently, everyone has to bring their pets to this location), then LAist's second stop on The Coffee Buzz train is just for you.
But if you aren't a fan of people who make sure their conversations are loud enough for you to hear so that you know how great their llives currently are —
Man: Things could not get any better for me right now.
Man #2: Yeah? Me too.
Man: That's just awesome, isn't it?
Man #2: Yes. Life is awesome.
— then you may want to wait for the off-season or until next week...when LAist's third stop may just be what you're looking for.
As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.
Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.
We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.
No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.
Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.
Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
