Soda Pop-Up: Galco's Annual Summer Tasting Coming Soon
Even if you've sworn off pop or support the soda ban, Galco's is classic L.A., and certainly worth a visit. Next weekend is the perfect time to check it out. From 5 p.m.-8 p.m. on July 22, they'll be hosting their annual tasting event, replete with soda samples, live music, culinary comedy from folks like Charles Phoenix, and a chance to chat it up with Galco’s owner John Nese, aka the “King of Pop.”
There will be an unveiling of a new soda line by the original creators of Doctor Pepper, Dublin Bottling Works, who had been producing the drink since 1891, but were shut down by Snapple this winter. To add to the bubbly festivities, Pheonix will be unveiling a 7-layer Pop Rocks soda cake for the nibbling.
Here are some of the sodas that'll be on tap at the event:
- · Old Dominion Root Beer (based on a historical recipe from the Library of Congress)
- · Mr. Q Cumber (soda of the year winner and first distributed at Galco’s)
- · Sweet Blossom line of floral sodas: rose, lavender, elderflower and jasmine
- · Ginger soda by Bruce Cost: fresh ginger, jasmine green tea and pomegranate
- · French sodas from Rieme (company has been producing sodas since 1921)
- · Volcanic Mineral Refresher (better for athletes than Gatorade; also helps hangovers/headaches)
Tickets for the Summer Soda Tasting are $12 in advance and $15 the day of, and can be purchased at Galco’s or online.
