Eat Like A King With These Decadent Elvis Presley-Inspired Bites

With our free press under threat and federal funding for public media gone, your support matters more than ever. Help keep the LAist newsroom strong, become a monthly member or increase your support today.

To celebrate Elvis Presley's birthday, several restaurants around L.A. are offering decadent treats that the King would definitely dig. Elvis was known for having a big appetite—and a penchant for bananas and bacon in his PB&Js—so, what better way to honor his memory than by chowing down on some his favorite flavors. The King's birthday is January 8 and if he were alive today (then again, maybe he still is?!), he would most likely hit up these spots for everything from sandwiches to ice cream inspired by his favorite flavors.

Mendocino Farms

For one-week only, the farm-fresh sandwich shop will offer the “PB3”—a modern twist on the kingly classic—at all of their locations. The "PB3" comes loaded with peanut butter, Applewood smoked bacon, caramelized bananas, honey roasted almonds and green apples, and is served on a panini pressed ciabatta. The special runs from Jan. 8 - 15.

Happy Birthday, Elvis at Salt & Straw (via Instagram)
Salt & Straw

The mad geniuses behind Portland-based ice-creamery Salt & Straw have once again whipped up a special batch known as "Happy Birthday, Elvis," which beautifully blends Elvis' love of milkshakes and sandwiches. The special ice cream flavor features homemade bacon-peanut butter Oreos, which are smashed and stirred into a malted banana pudding ice cream. You can find it all month at their Larchmont Village scoop shop, and eventually at the soon-to-open Abbot Kinney location. And if that's not enough, from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday night, there will be an Elvis impersonator stopping by the store.

Tiki No

North Hollywood's Tiki No—one of our favorite Tiki joints—will celebrate The King tonight by pouring Elvis-inspired cocktails and spinning his greatest hits all night long. The Burnt To A Crisp Texas Smokehouse truck will also be parked outside, serving special peanut butter, banana, and bacon sandwiches, along with their usual BBQ hits. The festivities kick off at 5 p.m. tonight. Elvis always loved a good luau.

Tiki No is located at 4657 Lankershim Blvd, North Hollywood, (818) 766-0116.

Greenspan's Grilled Cheese

No stranger to a hearty sandwich, Chef Eric Greenspan offers up a dessert on the regular menu at Greenspan's Grilled Cheese that The King would definitely love (tenderly). Aptly-named, The Elvis features white bread, banana and peanut butter cream cheese with the option to add bacon and/or Nutella—which we highly recommend you do.

Greenspan's Grilled Cheese is located at 7461 Melrose Ave, Los Angeles, (323) 591-0177

MB Post

Another reliable menu favorite, The "Elvis" at Chef David Lefevre's MB Post is a fantasticaly decadent mess of chocolate pudding, peanut butter mousse and bacon brittle. It's a mess that you just can't help falling in love with.

MB Post is located at 1142 Manhattan Ave, Manhattan Beach, (310) 545-5405.

At LAist, we focus on what matters to our community: clear, fair, and transparent reporting that helps you make decisions with confidence and keeps powerful institutions accountable.

Today, on Giving Tuesday, your support for independent local news is critical. With federal funding for public media gone, LAist faces a $1.7 million yearly shortfall. Speaking frankly, how much reader support we receive now will determine the strength of this reliable source of local information now and for years to come.

This work is only possible with community support. Every investigation, service guide, and story is made possible by people like you who believe that local news is a public good and that everyone deserves access to trustworthy local information.

That’s why on this Giving Tuesday, we’re asking you to stand up for independent reporting that will not be silenced. With more individuals like you supporting this public service, we can continue to provide essential coverage for Southern Californians that you can’t find anywhere else. Become a monthly member today to help sustain this mission. It just takes 1 minute to donate below.

Thank you for understanding how essential it is to have an informed community and standing up for free press.
