Delicat Dishes Out Foam-Topped Tapas And Summery Cocktails Downtown
Hotel food isn't generally known for its creativity, but Delicat, the Spanish-inspired restaurant at Downtown L.A.'s brand-new Tuck Hotel, is breaking the mold. The boutique hotel opened quietly in early 2017, but Delicat is slated to be unveiled this Friday, just in time for summer. The timing is serendipitous, given that Delicat's light tapas selection and fruity cocktail menu seem designed for lingering over dinner and drinks on a hot June night; the Spanish Gin & Tonic, served with a generous handful of fresh blackberries, is particularly refreshing.
Along with its summery cocktails, Delicat serves up an array of modernized Spanish small-plate classics based on the menu at Chef Paco Parreño's original Delicat restaurant in Valencia, Spain. Familiar tapas plates like croquetas and paella get the vegetable-forward L.A. treatment at Delicat, and simple entrees like smoked salmon and the coyly named "Just A Tomato Salad" are made deliciously more complex with the addition of fresh guacamole, burrata and "citrus air" (also known as foam, which might seem like a total culinary pretension, but works surprisingly well atop a salad.)
The Tuck Hotel has just 14 rooms, and Delicat is accordingly minimalist; designed by Michelin-starred hotelier Juan Torre, the restaurant holds just a few tables, which gives you the impression you've stumbled upon a hidden gem. Delicat isn't necessarily the place for a rowdy group dinner, but it's perfect for escaping the chaos of downtown's Fashion District and unwinding with some highbrow appetizers.
Delicat is located at 820 S Spring Street, downtown L.A. Hours are 5 to 10 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday, and 5 p.m. to 12 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. (213) 947-3815.
