  • Good news [for democracy] Voter registration for Tuesday's election is about 700,000 higher than during the last California presidential primary four years ago. Bad news [for politicos] Some county elections officials project that roughly 20 percent of the ballots might not be tallied until Wednesday or later.

  • Good news [for Obama] The Ill Sen. received the nod of approval from the largest Spanish language newspaper in the nation, La Opinion. In their endorsement, the editorial board said, "we were disappointed with [Clinton's] calculated opposition to driver’s licenses for the undocumented, which contrasts markedly from the forceful argument in support made by Obama." Bad news [for Obama] He still trails Clinton by as many as 7 percentage points in California.

  • Good news [for presidential supporters] Today, Clinton unveiled a new stump speech at Cal State L.A. with a star-studded backdrop behind her that included local politicians, Magic Johnson and others. An Obama event at UCLA tomorrow will not feature the candidate bu will showcase his wife, Michelle and Oprah, Caroline Kennedy and others (RSVP here).Bad news [for some Clintonists] Some were not impressed by Clinton's East L.A. appearance, but with three days left until Tuesday's historic primary, who among us won't miss the fervently political atmosphere in a town mostly devoted to entertainment?

  • Good news [for drivers]: Mayor Villaraigosa plans to eliminate rush hour parking on busy city streets to unclog the arterial traffic during peak times on Pico and Olympic. Bad news [for some local shops] Some are decrying the move as anti-business.

  • Good news [for Exxon] The oil giant posted record profits, announcing yesterday that it earned $40.6 billion last year. Bad news [for drivers] Oil costs around $100 a barrel, but is holding steady at around $3.00 a gallon.

  • Bad news [for for Sunday in the park-ers] A light storm is supposed to hit Southern California tonight, dropping as much as an inch of rain.Good news [for Sunday in the park-ers] Weather casters are mostly wrong.

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
