Where Will You Be When The Ball Drops?

Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

Not that any ball drops here in Los Angeles and it frustrates us to no end that we don't have a signature New Year's celebration. That said, hopefully you're better prepared for the dawning of 2005 than we are. Those last minute invitations to join someone on their private jet to South Beach or Vegas to ring in the New Year just aren't rolling in like we'd hoped.

We're not bitter. We can still crash a Hollywood Hills mansion party or hop the gate into Bel Air and hold Tinkerbell hostage for access to the Hilton compound. We might even forego all the pomp and circumstance and pop open a cheap bottle of champagne with "Dick Clark and his Rockin' Eve. "

What do you mean Regis has replaced Mr. Clark? Can't we have just a little joy this holiday season?

Here are LA's best parties you can actually go to on December 31st:

The Killers join Paul Oakenfield, John Digweed, The Crystal Method and Mark Farina for Giant's Super Party from 8 PM to 4 AM. Any chance to see the Killers is a chance you shouldn't miss. There's also a fair chance that a sweaty stranger will try to kiss you at midnight. Tickets are $60.

Cinespace and Ivar are tag teaming for their New Year's Bash: Heaven & Hell. $50 gets you in both venues but we recommend ponying up another $30 for VIP access. We're not sure if the drinks will be flowing freely as they are taking bottle service reservations but it's sponsored by Brilliant Vodka so we'd bet on at least getting a few hundred samples of that. 4 dance rooms, adult film stars hosting the event, and Dick Clark Regis on their 30 foot screen.

Want a smaller crowd? Little Temple in Silver Lake features DJ Rashida (who also spins Sunday nights at Proper) and a live performance by local underground Hip Hop favorite Medusa. The crowd will be a varied set of multiculti hipsters and at midnight? Champagne for all. Tickets are only $20. Little Temple is located at 4519 Santa Monica Blvd.

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
