Flashy graphics and superfuturistic weapons aren't the only things grasping the attention gamers near and far these days. Riding along with the success of this past weekend'sE for All video game expo, LA was home to this year's premier of Video Games Live, an orchestrated performance of some the gaming world's top musical scores. With renditions of everything from Tetris to Halo, this concert was definitely not as geeky as it sounds.

For the past couple LA performances, VGL established home base at the Hollywood Bowl. With the recent influx in downtown LA developments, the performance shifted east to the new Nokia Theatre (right next to the Staples Center.) Music composer Tommy Tallarico, who established his cred working on PC game Advent Rising, MC'd the event, taking us on a journey through gaming scores throughout history. There were also appearences by several industry "celebrities", including professional gamer Fatal1ty, gaming guitarist "Vertex Guy" and Atari founder/Pong creator Nolan Bushnell. Needless to say, the crowd went nuts.

The interesting thing about this performance is the fact that, when it comes down to it, we have an audience with an incerdibly wide age range all enjoying fundamental classical music. The orchestra performed these pieces with much enthusiasm and aplomb; everyone was just so into it. After experiencing such renditions of Metal Gear Solid, Super Mario, and Sonic, everyone quietly confirmed to eachother that the finale would in fact be One Winged Angel from Final Fantasy VII, and the audience got their wish (see below.)

In the end, Video Games Live proved to be something that doesn't have to be enjoyed solely by the gamers of the world, but something that spans an incredible range of audiences. Highly recommended!
