John Barrowman, the star of the Dr. Who spinoff Torchwood, just tied the knot with his partner of 20 years right here in California.

The actor, who's now a regular on The CW's Arrow, posted a short video clip on July 2 to Whosay of himself and his partner, Scott Gil in their car: "It's five after one and we've got our coffee and we're in the car getting ready to leave, because where are we going, Scott?" Gill replies "To get married. Yay!"

"We're getting married in the state of California," Barrowman says before the clip ends. "Thank you, Supreme Court, about time you made it legal. See you after we have the ceremony!" They also sing along to Air Supply's "All Out of Love," which is playing on the radio.

Their wedding is just one of hundreds of same-sex marriages now taking place in California now that Prop. 8 has been declared unconstitutional.

The two later posted a picture of themselves holding their band new marriage certificate (registered in Riverside County) and showing off their wedding bands.

"We are now legally married," they wrote. "Thanks for all your great wishes. JB and Scott."

In 2006, Barrowman and Gill entered into a civil partnership in a 2006 ceremony in Wales. "It's not really recognition but it's important for people to see the normality of the entire situation and it forces people who don't agree with gay men and women to have to accept us," Barrowman told Wales Online. "We deserve rights like everybody else."

We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.
