Dave Isay will be at the 3rd Street Promenade Borders today at 2pm to discuss StoryCorps - the ambitious project that toured the country in search of stories. Your stories. Our stories. Your great-grandmother's buried stories that you knew nothing about and then, suddenly, you did and nothing was quite the same again.
10,000 interviews that StoryCorps gathered over the past four years (from the two booths in New York to the traveling booths touring all over the place, including a lengthy stint in Los Angeles) have been culled to bring you 49 of the most diverse, compelling and downright fascinating stories. The result is Listening Is an Act of Love, a print version of the oral history of America, told by (and for) other people all over the country.
One of the most interesting aspects of the StoryCorps 40-minute interviews is that they were recorded not just for eventual book-publishing, but for the interviewees. If you gave an interview in a StoryCorps booth sometime in the past four years, you received a CD of your own interview. Those who participated in this project say their interviews changed their lives - that their families and friends have learned something about them that wasn't known before.
Did you participate in StoryCorps when it was here in LA? Did your story make it into the book?
