LAst Laugh: This Week in Comedy

Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

Back off kid, I'm not going to adopt your brown exploding face, thanks. Photo by byrneout via Flickr.

There's a few big events going on this week, from the LA Comedy Festival continuing over at Acme on La Brea, to the start of the Harold Competition at iO West. There's a bunch of good sketch this week at Acme and UCB, and some solid stand up around town. Not to mention Aziz. Always Aziz. If you want your stuff hyped, hit me up here.

MONDAY 5/4

Rigor Tortoise, 9:30p LA Comedy Fest @ Acme. This great sketch comedy group is sure to put on an awesome showing, so get out and help ‘em out.

Rec League, 7p Comedy Sports. Apparently you can get into a comedy recreation league over at comedy sports. Awesome. Go check this out, for better or worse.

TUESDAY 5/5

Harold Competition, 8/11p iO West. Harold competition is back at iO West, with last year’s winning team - Local 132 - deep in the mix against such ballerholic teams as USS Rock N Roll, Dr. Rocktopuss, Powerhouse, and DHT. Make your vote count.

Rod Man, 8p Comedy & Magic Club. A really solid stand up with some serious credentials behind him. Check him out while you’re at the beach.

WEDNESDAY 5/6

Tang, 6:30p UCB. This great girl team from iO West is seriously on a roll these days. Be sure to give them some love for their Spank slot over at UCB. It should be the beginning of great things to come for these ladies. Then you know you BETTER stick around for Birthday Boys.

Versailles, 7:30p LA Comedy Fest @ Acme. This short film stars the comedy-bonerrific Fred Willard, with a Q & A with the legend to follow. DO THIS.

THURSDAY 5/7

A Cause for Comedy, 8p The Improv. $10 is all it takes to see some great comedy hosted by Ben Morrison and presented by Causecast, with proceeds going to LA's Project Angel Food. Check out their site here for more info.

Jeff Clinard, 8:30p Comedy Store. A great stand up with a strong head of steam coming from the OC, Clinard is also on the LAist fave house team Local 132 at iO West. Definitely a must see.

FRIDAY 5/8

Aziz Ansari, 8p The Improv. It’s Aziz. Go laugh your fucking ass off. Sorry for the curse words, I just want you to know that I’m serious.

Erik Griffin, 9p Downtown Comedy Club. GUYS! DOWNTOWN GOT A COMEDY CLUB AGAIN! I’m not saying what’s going on there is going to be ‘good’ or ‘worth it’, but come on, it’s DOWNTOWN AND HOW HIP IS THAT?!

SATURDAY 5/9

Ian Bagg, 8p Ice House. Bagg is well known for his brash demeanor and ability to absolutely RUIN drunk hecklers, so I don’t recommend trying to out-joke this man. But someone else probably will, so go watch that.

Ron Babcock, 11p LA Comedy Fest @ Acme. Comedy’s Ron Babcock is a singular stand up force to be reckoned with. And the only way to stop him is to laugh at his jokes. Go kill Ron Babcock with your laughter.

SUNDAY 5/10

Top Story Weekly, 9p iO West. The newest sketch addition to the iO West Sunday sketch line-up, this show is fresh every week and tackles the latest happenings in a Daily Show / SNL style.

Exploring the Space with Josh Fadem, 9:30p UCB. As an astute reader pointed out, there is no Garlin show this weekend, so get out instead and see Fadem do his thing on a Sunday night.

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
