One year ago, Congress defunded public media. Now that we're 100% community funded, please become a sustaining member or increase your existing membership today.

Today's Pets of the Week are from spcaLA, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles. Sunday is spcaLA's 134th anniversary! Since 1877, spcaLA has provided Southern California with programs and services including Cruelty Investigation, Disaster Animal Response Team, Humane Education and a variety of shelter services.

In the spirit of the season, take a look at your local shelter's needs list like this one from spcaLA. All shelters can use donations of gently used blankets and towels, pet foods, treats, and toys, but they may also need some special items like, office supplies, a microwave, or canopies. Every item that is donated leaves more cash in the budget to go towards the care of the shelter pets.

Meet Lady (11-02684), a bounding ball of energy! She is a very active girl and loves to play with toys. This 4-year-old Terrier mix is very loyal and intelligent; she knows sit, down, roll over, and shake. She would do best with an active family who would like to take her for daily walks and playtime in the park.

Hi, I am Aphrodite (11-02851), a beautiful 4 year old tabby who is looking for a warm lap to curl up in. I love to play with feather toys! I am super affectionate, and very friendly. Although I love humans, I would prefer to be the only cat in the house. Please come by and visit me!Lady and Aphrodite are available at spcaLA's P.D. Pitchford Companion Animal Village & Education Centerin Long Beach.

One year ago, Congress voted to defund public media, eliminating a critical $1.7 million from our budget every year going forward. But they couldn’t silence us, and we’re not going anywhere. LAist is now 100% community funded and that means we’re taking our future into our own hands and turning to you to keep local reporting strong.

You come to LAist because you want independent reporting and trustworthy local information. Our nonprofit newsroom doesn’t answer to shareholders looking to turn a profit. Instead, we answer to you and our communities. We are free to follow facts wherever they lead and to hold power to account without fear or favor. Our only loyalty is to our readers and listeners and our mission: to inform, engage, and strengthen Southern California’s communities.
