Pets of the Week: Marcus & Nellie

Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

Marcus, a 7-month-old Maltese/Wheaton Terrier mix, is a small dog with a big personality! He has an overbite which gives his sweet face tons of character. He will probably grow to be around 15 lbs.

He didn't have a great puppyhood before he was rescued by the Bill Foundation. Abandoned as a puppy, he did not receive proper socialization and he displayed some minor behavior problems. Rather than give up on him, a trainer with the Bill Foundation worked with him and those issues have been resolved. Because of his rough start in life, he would benefit from continued training to help him be the best dog he can be. Marcus knows sit, stay, and walks well on a leash. He is crate-trained, potty-trained, and displays no food aggression around other dogs. In fact, he gets along with all dogs, big or small. Marcus currently lives in a foster home with a Spaniel and the two of them have a ball playing chase.

Marcus loves his walks, enjoys being trained, and having structure in his life. The reward for the love and attention you put into Marcus is an incredibly loving companion who will give you warm puppy kisses and a life time of loyalty. He would love to be in a home with another dog or with a family that has ample time to spend with him. Marcus really wants to become a part of a loving "pack."

Contact the Bill Foundation to meet Marcus or stop by their mobile adoption today at the Healthy Spot in Santa Monica. The Bill Foundation rescues primarily dogs and sometimes cats from the Los Angeles City Shelter System and places them into loving homes.

Nellie (A308977) is a pretty 4-month-old gray and white tabby. She is very playful and loves to play with toys. Nellie's adoption fee is $70, which includes her spay surgery, a microchip, the first set of vaccinations, as well as a free follow-up health check at a participating vet. New adopters will receive a complimentary health and wellness exam from VCA Animal Hospitals.

Contact the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA for more info on Nellie or visit the Society 11am-4pm Sunday, 9am-5pm Tuesday-Friday, or 9am-4pm Saturday.

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
