Local Rock Must-See: Biblical Proof of UFOs Play Spaceland 12/3

During the six years relocated Clevelanders Biblical Proof of UFOs haunted the dives of Los Angeles, they made my world a better place.
This one band brought so many of my favorite things in the same package. They had a simply colossal sound, shape-shifting between glacial-pace Black Sabbath grind and Who-like momentum, powered by memorable tunes and sweetened with angelic vocal harmonies. They could step on any stage, in any room, with lousy acoustics and a shite PA, and blow it up. Critically, they had a keen sense of dynamics that went far beyond most of their peers, not just a gentle caress followed by a kick in the teeth. They had patience, and if it took seven minutes to get from A to B in order to set it up properly, so it went.
The band wrote prolifically but recorded sporadically, producing three full-length CDs, each radically different from the last. 2003's Interstellar Messages caught them at their peak, and remains one of the finest albums of the decade. Toward the end of their run I saw them do a couple of shows that resembled Pink Floyd at Pompeii, formless excursions into outer space. About a third of their final bow, 8-Track Demo(n)s is made up of acoustic porch jams not far removed from the spaciest moments of Exile On Main Street.
Guitarist and singer Joey Shipman moved back to Cleveland at the beginning of 2006, re-forming the DuValby Bros., while rhythm section Ray Pillar and Mike Peffer have remained busy in Ian Screams (Peffer also had a long stint with Brant Bjork and the Bros). This Monday, December 3, the three will re-converge for a free show at Spaceland, their first in LA since the split, and I sure can't think of anywhere you'd rather be. They're on at 10:00 PM followed by the Binges, who are beginning their Monday night residency. I've not seen them yet but a visit to their Myspace page had me flinging the sign of Satan at my PC within seconds.
