LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Win Crucial Game in Arizona
LA Dodgers defeat Arizona Diamondbacks 4-1. Dee Gordon's thumb was wrapped up tighter than a burrito after Wednesday night's game. Gordon said he didn't want to go on the disabled list, but that's exactly where he landed. The official diagnosis was a torn ulnar collateral ligament in the right thumb and will require surgery. Gordon is due to miss six weeks.
The move makes room for the return of reliever Javy Guerra who last pitched on June 2 after having right knee surgery. I guess Mattingly won't see Javy get extended in another rehab outing.
Now Mark Ellis made his first start since being recalled from the disabled list on Wednesday. He started out with a one-out single in the first inning. Four basehits later, the Dodgers had the 2-0 lead with Nathan Eovaldi to start on the mound. That was the second time this season Eovaldi was given as many as two runs by the offense.
Despite giving one run back in the bottom of the second escaping a bases-loaded jam with no outs without even more damage, a slumping Scott Van Slyke belted a solo homer in the fourth inning to left field to give Eovaldi a season-high three runs of support.
Even Elian Herrera got in on the action hitting his first career Major League homer in the top of the seventh that knocked D-Backs starter Wade Miley out of the game.
This win for Eovaldi was the first win he had since his Major League debut on Aug. 6, 2011 which also happened to be in Arizona.
LA Angels defeat Baltimore Orioles 9-7. Is there no sanctuary for Angel starting pitching? With news of Dan Haren being put on the disabled list for the first time in his 10-year career with lower back stiffness, the rookie Garrett Richards had his struggles giving up seven runs.
But the Angels offense did not allow this to become more of the Cleveland series. Mike Trout went 2-for-2 stealing three bases and scoring twice. Kendrys Morales went 3-for-4 with three RBI.
