LAst Laugh: This Week in Comedy

Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

I said KEEP IT LOW KEY, Ronnie! Photo via rinkrat or LAist Flickr pool.
This week is all about the one man stand up sets, and not much else. That is, unless you count the internet's preeminent sketch kingpins Harvard Sailing Team at UCB, or the new This Is Awkward storytelling show, or any one of a million other great and hilarious things to do this week. Don't be fooled by your Netflix queue - there's a whole world out there, waiting to be interacted with.

Who has two thumbs and loves getting emailed about shows? This guy.

MONDAY 10/11

Punchline Magazine 5 Yr Show, 8p Largo. LAist previously gave kudos to both Punchline and Largo for putting up such a stellar show, with Greg Proops, Marc Maron, Maria Bamford, Whitney Cummings and Chris Hardwick all confirmed for comedy. This is undoubtedly the powerhouse show of the week.

The Moth, 8p Echoplex. Another StorySLAM is upon us! Help the packed house pick a winner, but rest assured each story will be amazing.

TUESDAY 10/12

Brian Scolaro, 8p Irvine Improv. Ah, yes, the coveted Tuesday mainstage spot. Get out to this if only to help keep the lights on.

Harvard Sailing Team, 11p UCB. Sketch comedy at its absolute finest. This group is absurd, intelligent, outrageous and so effing funny it hurts. Circle this date on your calendar so you won’t forget, you schlub.

WEDNESDAY 10/13

The Farley Bros. Radio Hour, 8p Second City. Now a weekly Second City occurence, the Farley brothers get together to talk about their legendary brother and whatever else comes to their minds, all of which makes its way onto their podcast.

Prism Box, 7:30p Elephant Theatre. Another great showcase show is off to a strong start. Delicatessen, Shakedown, Squeeze, and Arsonists Toolkit are just a few of the teams set to play.

Gary Owen, 8p Ontario Improv. Gary is making a weekend out of it in Ontario, god bless his heart.

FRIDAY 10/15

Hal Sparks, 10p Brea Improv. It’s going to be a long weekend in Brea for Hal, so head down to give him some company.

Friday Forty, 10p iO West. Three players, 40 ounces each, and 40 questions on what went down in the week that was. This is a great show.

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
