LAst Laugh: This Week in Comedy

Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

Let's get serious for a second. Photo by lucyrk via LAist Flickr pool.
What a week for comedy we can all expect this week. iO West is finishing up their Bobby Hot Stuff Slacker tournament, Patton Oswalt is down in the OC, Pasadena's Ice House prepares itself for a celebration 50 years in the making, and the Air Conditioned Supper Club makes a push for comedy west of the 405. Don't be a horrible person - support comedy. You grump.

Turn that frown upside down by emailing me with some show recommendations. I'd love to hear 'em!

MONDAY 9/27

Support for LAist comes from

The Moth, 7p Air Conditioned Supper Club. The Moth (review here) is back on the westside to talk about Movies. Put your name in the hat to get a chance at storytelling.

Business Drinks, 10p iO West. Cherry Crush cagematch champs Business Drinks asks for a big-time regret from an audience member, and then jams on the improv gas pedal.

TUESDAY 9/28

Patton Oswalt, 8p Irvine Improv. This is his second of two shows (the first being Monday), so don’t miss it OC!

Dealbreaker Book Release, 11p UCB. The great Dealbreaker blog done got themselves a book deal, and this night is to celebrate all things Dealbreaker. Great comics(Matt Braunger, DC Pierson, Kate Micucci) music, signings, and an all around party.

WEDNESDAY 9/29

BULLETPROOF!, 6:30p UCB. The eye-searing explosion-fest is back and more blowy-uppy than ever. Come out to help this great show get a run at UCB.

Sarah Silverman & Friends, 8:30p Largo. The monthly stand up show where Sarah brings along a lot of jokes and some special guests.

THURSDAY 9/30

Larry Miller, 8p Comedy & Magic Club. Expect slightly curmudgeonly stand up from a man with a great nose for political foibles.

Chelsea Peretti, 8p Hollywood Improv. She’s a favorite of comedians across the country, and with good reason. This lovely lady kills.

FRIDAY 10/1

Jon Lovitz, 8p Irvine Improv. Lovitz is in town all weekend, so you’ve got a few chances to catch him.

Nick Thune, 8p Hollywood Improv. LAist thinks Nick Thune is the bee’s knees (review here), so go find out for yourself if you agree.

SATURDAY 10/2

Out of the Wheelhouse, 7p Air Conditioned Supper Club. A great new stand up show that asks comics to generate new material on the spot, featuring Eddie Pepitone, Lizzy Cooperman, and more.

Kevin Nealon, 9p Brea Improv. Nealon, after a few quiet years, has been making the rounds pretty heavy lately, and with good reason: he’s hilarious. He’s also in Brea all weekend.

SUNDAY 10/3

Crashbar, 7p Impro Theatre. Great improv comedy from some of LA’s best indie teams, with a dollop of stand up in the middle to boot.

Week of 100 Stars, 8:30p Ice House. The Ice House in Pasadena is gearing up for it’s big anniversary party with a weeklong celebration known as Week of 100 Stars. Great comics from all over will be coming out to show their support, and it kicks off tonight.

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
