Well, for those of you in the know, this week is the beginning of the Del Close Marathon in New York City. For LA, that means the sketch and improv community usually thins out a bit, and shows are certainly easier to get into. Luckily, this year doesn't seem to be taking a back seat to those crappy right-coasters, with a ton of great stuff lined up all weekend. Comedy is Dead is back, Tiger Lily sports a huge line up, Patton Oswalt is at Largo, and UCB is pulling together a Reno 911! show. Man, what a great week to be a comedy fan.

If you'd like to get a show listed, email me and we can talk. Until then, get out and see some shows!

MONDAY 7/26

Tiger Lily, 8p Hollywood Studio Bar & Grill. Seriously, this show should be on this list just about every week. TJ Miller, Jen Kirkman, Kumail Nanjiani, Whitney Cummings, David Koechner and many more. It’s madness.

Reno 911!: A XXX Parody, Midnight UCB. Yes, there really is a Reno 911! parody porn. yes, the real Reno folks have seen it. And yes, it’s all going down at UCB, with the complete cast!

TUESDAY 7/27

Harold Night, 8p iO West. Tuesdays are for Harolds at iO West, so drop in any time between 8 - 11p for some of the best in structured long form improvisation, given to us by Del Close himself.

Brian Haner, 8p Ontario Improv. Haner is out in Ontario, continuing to show off his considerable comedy and guitar skills.

WEDNESDAY 7/28

Smooth Laughs, 8p Theatre Asylum. Head down to Theater Row for a chance to see some up and coming sketch comedy.

Nerdist Podcast, 8:30p Largo. Nerdist himself Chris Hardwick is doing a live taping of his podcast with Fred Willard (who is timelessly funny) and some other fine folks.

THURSDAY 7/29

Comedy Zen, 8p Japanese American National Museum. For those downtowners looking to stay local, Comedy Zen should be a fantastic night of stand up in Little Tokyo. Use prepay code LAIST to save a couple bucks, too!

Comedy is Dead, 9p Hollywood Forever. Seriously, this is the best recurring stand up show in LA, everything else be damned. The space, the line-up, it’s all top notch. This time around, Duncan Trussell brings us Tig Notaro, Tim Heidecker, Natasha Leggero, Kumail Nanjiani, Rob Huebel, Paul Scheer and more names than can be mentioned here.

FRIDAY 7/30

Up Close & Prestidigitational, 8p Comedy & Magic Club. Crazy up close magic and whatever the hell ‘psychic comedy’ is.

Damon Wayans, 10p Irvine Improv. D. Wayans is deep in the OC all weekend.

Robot Christmas Special, 6p UCB. Billy Merritt pulls up some of his best improv pals to jam out at UCB.

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
