LAst Laugh: This Week in Comedy
Cat fart? Photo by 51221241@N02 via LAist Flickr pool.
It's a bit of a mixed blessing week, folks. The US Mens National Team is no longer in the World Cup hunt, but we can still get as drunk and meat-crazy as we want this weekend. That's what makes this country great - we get drunk in the face of adversity. And there's no better place to get drunk this week than at one of these great comedy shows. Drunk off LAUGHTER, that is. Or booze.
Email me if you'd like to try to get your show listed here. Thanks, and Happy 4th!
MONDAY 6/28
Hotel Comedy, 7p Hotel Cafe. The Hotel Cafe is trying to expand things a bit with a new comedy night. Stand ups include Brent Weinbach, Neal Brennan & Ian Bagg, plus sketch comedy from the amazing Fries On The Side crew.
A Girl’s Best Friend, 8p iO West. The hilarious Courtney Pape uses her one-woman show to let us all know what’s like to be the ‘best friend’ instead of the leading lady.
TUESDAY 6/29
Big News, 8p Comedy Central Stage. Normally at iO West, the Big News crew moves down to Santa Monica for this free news-centric sketch comedy show.
Brian Haner, 8p Ontario Improv. Guitar-fueled comedy from Brian Haner of Jef Dunham Show fame.
WEDNESDAY 6/30
Drugs!, 8p Comedy Central Stage. The incomparable Drew Droege lets you in on all the crazy shit drugs make people do. That way, you don’t have to do them yourself.
Room 101, 8p The Complex. One of the cities best improv showcase shows. This week features Dave Theune & Jennie Pierson, Shakedown, and UCB March Madness winners Small Town Sheriff.
THURSDAY 7/1
This One Time..., 9p Zephyr Theatre. Charlie Sanders and Margie Kment host a night of awesome storytelling with Ellie Kemper, Lizzy Cooperman, Greg Tuculescu and Colton Dunn.
Hugh Moore, 10p Hollywood Improv. Stand up Hugh Moore is down on Melrose doing stand up at the classic Improv.
FRIDAY 7/2
Mission IMPROVable, 10p Westside Comedy. The high energy, touring-style short form show that started it all for the Westside Comedy guys.
Tom Green, 10p Irvine Improv. Not sure how well the OC will respond to Tom Green, but I imagine his late night show will be a good deal wackier.
SATURDAY 7/3
Zombie Defense Plan, 9p Andy Dick @ iO West. Around the corner from the mainstage, this fast-moving improv team lets the audience know what can happen when zombies attack.
The Freedom Show, 10p UCB. A host of UCB regulars will be celebrating the birth of America with a ridiculous show that may or may not involve grilled hot dogs.
SUNDAY 7/4
Get drunk & fight!
As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.
Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.
We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.
No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.
Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.
Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
