LAst Laugh: This Week in Comedy
He sure is thirsty! Photo by victoriabernal via LAist Flickr pool.
The Hollywood Improv isn't going to have trouble pulling in spectators and celebrities alike, as David Spade and Jim Breuer all drop in for sets throughout the week. Over at UCB, two epic shows (Prison Freaks and The S.W.A.) are taking place, ensuring grumbling diners at Birds and happy fans waiting in line.
As always, feel free to email me if you've got a show you'd like to see promoted on this list. Otherwise, enjoy your week after Mother's Day, when you've (hopefully) escaped the harsh judgements about your greeting card choices for another year.
MONDAY 5/10
Doug Benson Interruption, 9p Largo. Benson loves making life hell for the astounding stand up comics who do his show. And man is it funny.
Mystic Mondays, 10:30p iO West. Yet another great improv showcase show, this week Mystic plays host to D’Artagnan, Gielglud, and Shivers. Should be a great show.
TUESDAY 5/11
Jim Breuer, 8p Hollywood Improv. Jim drops in for a single set at the famous Hollywood Improv on Melrose.
Nerdist Podcast taping, 8:30p Largo. Chris ‘Nerdist’ Hardwick is letting Tom Lennon, Mike Phirman (who he does Hard N' Phirm with) and a host of others take over Largo, all in the name of a podcast.
WEDNESDAY 5/12
No War, No God, No Nickelback, 8p Comedy Central Stage. Jamie Kilstein is up to absolutely no good over at the CC Stage. And don’t forget, these shows are free!
Bandit v. Suckerbet, 8p iO West. The Harold Competition at iO moves closer to completion, with Bandit taking on Suckerbet. Your vote counts!
THURSDAY 5/13
Prison Freaks: A Talent Show, 8p UCB. Shannon O’Neill is an amazing New York performer who is taking her solo character show for a stop at UCB LA. This should be an absolute must for you.
Sit N Spin, 8p Comedy Central Stage. There’s a reason this storytelling show is featured every month at the heavily-booked Comedy Central Stage: it’s amazing.
FRIDAY 5/14
Jive Joint, 8p Labcabin. If you’re interested in a bit of it all - music, stand up, improv, maybe even some mime - then the monthly Jive Joint is absolutely for you.
Maz Jobrani, 10p Brea Improv. Maz is out in Brea all weekend, telling better jokes than you. That’s for sure.
SATURDAY 5/15
Horrible Movie Night, 8p The Complex. HMN is back and meatier than ever, with The Meateater clogging up your appetite for barely-approachable cinema. Feel free to start writing your ‘sausage’ jokes now.
David Spade, 8p Hollywood Improv. The Improv is bringing the names this week, and Spade is no exception. Expect more than a few of his comedy buddies to drop by as well.
SUNDAY 5/16
The S.W.A., 6p UCB. GAH! Sean Conroy, Billy Merritt, and Andy Daly of famous improv team The Swarm are doing a three-man show at UCB. This show is magic.
The Lost Tomb of King Sunday, 7:30p Groundlings. Why not treat yourself to some giggles with the Groundling’s Sunday Company sketch show?
As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.
Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.
We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.
No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.
Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.
Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
