LAst Laugh: This Week in Comedy

Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

Big yet small yet big. Photo by casualtimetravel via LAist Flickr photo pool.

The Ice House is hosting the finals of Uncle Clyde's stand up competition, UCB's Let's Do This! has March Madness winner Small Town Sheriff and UCBTNY performer Chris Gethard doing his one man show on Thursday, while The Moth meets up in Mid-City and TigerLily keeps the comedy coming in Hollywood. No matter where you turn or what night you're interested, great comedy is to be had around town for a few bucks or less.

Don't forget to let this guy know if you'd like to try to get a show mentioned on this list.

The Nerdist, 8:30p Largo. Original Nerdist Chris Hardwick headlines Largo with Adam Savage and some other comedy good guys.

What’s Up, TigerLily?, 8p Hollywood Studio Bar & Grill. Brody Stevens, Jen Kirkman, Greg Proops, Eddie Pepitone, Jimmy Dore..How many more names do you need on one bill?

TUESDAY 4/6

The Moth, 7:30p Busby’s East. This fantastic storytelling show takes over Busby’s in Mid-City for the night.

WEDNESDAY 4/7

Evan & Gareth’s New Years Extravaganza, 8p Comedy Central Stage. These guys couldn’t do their New Years Eve sketch show... you know... around New Years. So they’re doing it now. Hilarious.

Uncle Clyde’s Cup, 8p Ice House. The culmination in an ongoing stand up competition, you can help determine the winner of Uncle Clyde’s Cup. Who knows, maybe they’ll buy you a drink with their $500 in winnings if you vote for them.

THURSDAY 4/8

Laugh-In Reunion / Benefit Show, 7:30p Comedy Store. Lily Tomlin is getting some recognition from the comedy crowd (both young and old - including Rainn Wilson) in this animal-friendly gala event.

Sit N’ Spin, 8p Comedy Central Stage. Another free essay show, this time with Kathy Najimi, Eric Pierson, and some other great reader/writer/performers.

FRIDAY 4/9

Soundtrack, 9:30p UCB. Bring your iPods, CDs, whatever, and become the impetus to the fully improvised show before you. Keep the weird stuff on there, too. They’ll find it.

Darrell Hammond, 10p Irvine Improv. Hammond is here for two shows Friday and one show Saturday, so there’s no excuse not to check him out at some point.

SATURDAY 4/10

TuskegeeXperiment, 11p iO West. This great long-form improv team plays fast, plays hard, and -most importantly- plays funny.

Rowdy Roddy Piper & Friends, 11:30p Improv. Roddy Piper brings more than just fake pain to his opponents these days. He also brings stand up to the Hollywood Improv.

SUNDAY 4/11

John Pinette, 7p Ice House. Pinette moves east from last week’s stint at the Comedy & Magic Club, but only for one show. Don’t miss it.

Tremendosaur, 8p iO West. These two sketch comedy guys have been taking over a stage / computer screen near you lately, so I highly suggest locking up your giggles or they’ll all get stolen at this show.

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
