LAst Laugh: This Week in Comedy

Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

The marathon: you're doing it wrong. Sort of. Photo via veggieannabanana on Flickr.

There's a bunch of great shows this week, but I've only got time to list one for each night. WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT FROM ME?! As always, you can really be a part of something special at one of those Andy Dick Black Box shows at iO West, or feel like you're part of the 'in' crowd over at UCB. And Melrose is really stepping up their game this week, as The Improv Lab, The Improv itself, and the Bungalow Club are all hosting some great shows.

MONDAY 3/22

Support for LAist comes from

Speakeasy, 8p Bungalow Club. Lizzy Cooperman, Chris Neff, Liz Steward and Bill Dwyer are all out on Melrose doing a free stand up show. Don’t act like you’re too good for great comedy for free on a Monday night.

TUESDAY 3/23

Dirty Mouths, 8p Improv Comedy Lab. Some great stand ups are next door to The Improv on Melrose, saying what they want and not giving a good goddamn. Nadya Ginsburg, Ian Harvie, Selene Luna and Justin Martindale help to round the line up.

WEDNESDAY 3/24

Rabbit Faced Story Soup, 8p Comedy Central Stage. This is a return trip for Laura Solon, who’s been taking this great character show to Edinburgh and London. Don’t miss this, unless you hate everything good.

THURSDAY 3/25

The Paul F. Tompkins Show, 8:30p Largo. PFT is doing his monthly show, so expect a well dressed man with a pocket square and amazing material.

FRIDAY 3/26

The Charlyne Yi Show, 8p UCB. The cuter-than-life Yi is raising some money this month for Haiti (trust me, it’s still a big deal) with one of her signature esoteric shows full of sweet chuckles, big laughs, and heart warming moments.

SATURDAY 3/27

Paul Rodriguez, 9p Brea Improv. Everyone knows and loves Paul, and this show should do well in Brea, so be sure to get your tickets early. He’s there all weekend, but you know you want to see the Saturday late show. It’ll give you time to recover.

SUNDAY 3/28

Moon County, 8p iO West. This great sketch group has been cutting their teeth for more than a year at iO’s Sketch Cagematch, and are putting up some of their best stuff in one show.

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
