LAst Laugh: This Week in Comedy

Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

Hey You Millionaires are in LA this week, at the Improv and iO West.

There's a ton out-of-town talent putting up stuff this week, from Jon Dore at Tiger Lily to Hey You Millionaires doing sketch comedy at The Improv. Plus it's St. Patty time, so The Irish Peddlers are on point at iO West. Also, the UCB March Madness tournament kicks into high gear, with the 24-team gauntlet at TNT on Tuesday night.

If you've got a show you'd like to get listed, shoot me an email and we'll talk about it!

MONDAY 3/15

The Smokes, 7p UCB. Great improv from great teachers and longtime UCB performers. They do different styles and alway play their hearts out.

What’s Up, Tiger Lily?, 8p Hollywood Studio Bar. This show got listed last week, but there’s just too much good comedy here again to not list it. Jon Dore, Andy Kindler, Brett Gelman, Kyle Kinane, and Natasha Leggero.

TUESDAY 3/16

March Madness Tournament, 7p TNT. The Sierra Stage is getting taken over as 24 improv teams vie for one semi-finals slot in the UCB March Madness Tournament - all in one night. The teams can’t vote, so you have to! Pick a winner from this amazing line up, only to feel the wrath of 23 other teams.

National Sketch Championships, 8p Hollywood Improv. Any show that has sketch comedy titans Sidecar and Hey You Millionaires in it is worth the cost The Improv forces down your throat. Seriously.

WEDNESDAY 3/17

Mortified, 8p King King. This great true stories reading series comes back into town, and you should be there.

The Irish Peddlers, 11p iO West. It’s your typical Irish night of revelry: heavy drinking, songs, fighting, drinking, dancing, drinking. You get the idea and you like the idea, so why not come?

THURSDAY 3/18

Sit n’ Spin, 8p Comedy Central Stage. Eddie Pepitone will help to bring in spring with this monthly essay show.

So I’m F*n This Girl, Right?, 8:30p Improv Lab. Ever wanted to hear a nasty story from Sam Tripoli, Bobby Lee, or Joe Rogan about that one time they boned down? Here’s your chance.

FRIDAY 3/19

Friday Forty, 10p iO West. Man, I love Friday 40. Get some comedy contestants on stage to answer current events questions, with a 40 in their hand. It’s a contest on so many levels, everyone wins.

Let’s Do This!, 11p UCB. Middleditch and Schwartz is all you need to hear to be at this show. Two man improv at its absolute best. Plus, a host of other great teams and two lovely leading ladies to take you through the whole night.

SATURDAY 3/20

Jamie Kennedy, 9p Irvine Improv. Should be a great stand up show down in the OC, with longtime stand up and familiar face Jamie Kennedy taking the stage.

Jon Lajoie, 9p Ontario Improv. Head east to see one of the internet’s most popular (and funniest) sensations play some songs and do some stand up.

SUNDAY 3/21

Brad Williams, 7p Ice House. Brad has been doing bits on the Tonight Show, Jimmy Kimmel, and Mind of Mencia for years, and has been opening for Mencia on the road for a long time.

Whiskey Sour Radio Hour, 8p Largo. Ed Helms brings along his banjo and some friends to really get into that bluegrass comedy we’ve been missing.

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
