LAst Laugh: This Week in Comedy
RIP MLK JR 2K10. Photo via bridgesoflosangeles on the LAist Flickr page.
It's MLK Jr. day, everyone. So I'm sure you're sitting back, enjoying the rain, and sipping something mocha. Well trust me, once you've gotten out of the matinee screening of The Lovely Bones you'll be ready for a laugh. And what better way to fend off the weather and the thought of an untimely 1968 assassination than with a good comedy show. For serious, people.
If you've got a show you'd like to promote, drop an email and we'll see if we can get it listed.
MONDAY 1/18
Ultimate X-Ecution, 8p iO West. The year begins anew with the hunt for the single best improviser in the city, American Idol style..
Benson Interruption, 9p Largo. Sarah Silverman joins the famed interruption show. This one is really great, if you’ve never been.
TUESDAY 1/19
Sex, Stand Up, Rock n’ Roll, 8p Improv. Hosted by former Skid Row drummer Phil Varone, this show is raunchy and naughty and funny. Everything you want in a Tuesday night.
Aziz Ansari, 9p Largo. There’s a show tonight and tomorrow night (and they may both be sold out as of this posting), but head down anyways for the possibility of some last minute tix. Also, Aziz’s special comes out tonight on Comedy Central.
WEDNESDAY 1/20
Adam Carolla Podcast LIVE, 8p Irvine Improv. They’re making this a monthly show, and man is it awesome. The last one had some of the best Carolla stuff to date - and I’ve listened to every podcast he’s done.
Pink Ribbon Comedy Tour, 8p Comedy Store. Great stand-up comedy for the even greater breast cancer cause. Get involved.
THURSDAY 1/21
Chicken Scratch, 8p iO West. A great essay show on the main stage at iO West.
In the Land of Tall Buildings / FrankenMatt, 8p UCB. This is a killer line up. LAist has gushed before about Jason Nash (Land of Tall Buildings) and the FrankenMatt guys . Now’s your chance to see them both at once. I’ll be there, so you should be too.
FRIDAY 1/22
Tom Rhodes, 8p Improv. Tom is a mainstay in the US comedy scene. He may not be as recognizable as some other faces, but he’s no less hilarious.
Pablo Francisco, 10p Irvine Improv. Don’t act like you didn’t grow up memorizing lines from Pablo’s first Comedy Central special. We haven’t heard much from him lately, but Pablo is flat out hilarious, and he’ll be here all weekend.
SATURDAY 1/23
Horrible Movie Night, 8p The Complex (6476 Santa Monica Blvd). The terrible cinema is back at the complex, and taking no prisoners. Any movie that has Joe Estevez and takes place in outer space is a movie I’ll be at.
It’s Criminal!, 8p Santa Monica Playhouse. A real life lawyer tells legal stories so fantastical you’d probably swear they were made up.
SUNDAY 1/24
Jon Lovitz, 7p Brea Improv. Jon is around all weekend, so why not go to an early Sunday show to take your mind off the fact that your beloved team is probably not in the hunt for the Super Bowl anymore.
Shitty Jobs, 11p UCB. Hands down some of the best improv you’ll see all week. These NYC guys are all well known, well loved, and well hung*.
*unconfirmed.
As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.
Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.
We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.
No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.
Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.
Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
