LAst Laugh: This Week in Comedy

I'll say this, there was probably nothing funnier than last weekend's Red Bull Soapbox Derby. An afternoon spent watching people eat shit? It's like America's Funniest Home Videos on Ice. Or in this case, pavement. At any rate, this week has some pretty big standards to live up to, but I don't think you'll be hurting for great shows. DERRCK is at UCB on Saturday AND Sunday, Nealon / Leno / Davidson / Rajskub / Jeffries are all doing stand up, and the essay shows live on. Email THIS GUY if you're interested in getting some hype love for a show you know.
UPDATE: I almost forgot, tonight is Sentimental Lady's LAST HAROLD NIGHT SHOW at UCB. Ever. One of the longest running UCBTLA teams, their long form improv is simply second to none. They're getting their own show on Saturday nights, but no longer will they be doing the Harold! Tickets are sold out, but standby will be available starting at 7p. DO WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO to make it to this 9:30 show, or it will literally be too late. Forever. Remember what happened to the dinosaurs? Yeah, like that.
MONDAY 9/28
Greg Proops Chat Show, 9p Largo. This is the CD release show, so I can imagine there’ll be a bevy of fun folks coming out.
Cagematch Omega, 9p iO West. L. Ron Jeremy (what a great Before & After, Wheel of Fortune fans) vanquished Slave Leia and is trying to hold onto their cagematch title.
TUESDAY 9/29
Steep Canyon Rangers, 7:30 & 10p Largo. Not really a comedy show, but Steve Martin is rumored to be involved. Any time, in any setting, you can see Steve Martin play the banjo - DO IT.
Tuesday Night Thunder, 8p Sierra Stage. This awesome weekly showcase holds down the fort for UCB up-and-comers looking for more stage time. Every week is there’s at least one great team, plus free admission and beer by donation. Weekly line-ups usually go up the day of.
WEDNESDAY 9/30
The Apple Sisters, 7p iO West. These girls have been highlighted here before, because their show is just so damn funny. Give ‘em a nice mid-week peek. Gosh, I’m clever.
Write Club, 8p Comedy Central Stage. Great written solo pieces by a bunch of different performers.
THURSDAY 10/1
Uncle Clyde’s Comedy Competition, 8p Ice House. Come see who’s ready to take home this ‘coveted’ prize. To be fair, past winners have included Bill Dwyer and Mike Phirman.
Mary-Lynn Star-Studded Show, 8p Laugh Factory. Mary-Lynn Rajskub, the long time funny stand up, is hosting her own show at the Laugh Factory.
FRIDAY 10/2
Jim Jeffries, 8p Hollywood Improv. This great stand up has been an absolute highlight of the Adam Carolla podcasts, if that’s your thing. He’s hilarious.
Tommy Davidson, 8p Laugh Factory Long Beach. Remember when Tommy came out of that rucksack and fought Jim Carrey in Ace Ventura 2? Awesome.
SATURDAY 10/3
DERRICK: Street Legal, 8p UCB. The DERRICK guys, internet sensations and UCB alum, rock some 3-man longform improv for the masses. Don’t miss this show. Seriously.
Kevin Nealon, 9p Irvine Improv. Head to the OC, as Nealon is headlining all weekend here.
SUNDAY 10/4
Jay Leno, 7p Comedy & Magic Club. His show is already starting to level off on the lower end of the rating spectrum, but hopefully his stand up hasn’t gone anywhere.
Shitty Jobs, 11p UCB. The UCB folks wizened up and gave this great group of NY improvisers their own weekly show. The time isn’t ideal, but the show itself is more than worth it.
